Long-term trial confirms the effectiveness of MiX Telematics' fleet management solution for public transport systems
Hanover, 19 September 2012 – A long-term trial undertaken by German bus operator Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft (SVG) has delivered conclusive results demonstrating the effectiveness of Fleet Manager, MiX Telematics' fleet management solution, with regard to reducing operating costs, improving fuel efficiency and reducing exhaust emissions.
"We deployed Fleet Manager in March 2011 and succeeded in improving our fuel efficiency by almost 10 percent compared to the previous 12 months," says SVG Manager Sven Seddig. "This corresponds with a reduction of more than 150 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions."
During the trial, 18 buses from the SVG fleet were equipped with Fleet Manager by Kienzle Automotive, MiX Telematics' Premium Partner for Germany. In addition to the onboard Fleet Manager computer, the solution included the optional RIBAS display, FM-Web and MiX Insight reports (see Editor's note). A total of 50 drivers participated in the trial.
In collaboration with SVG, MiX Telematics and Kienzle Automotive put together a programme for driver development, designed to reduce fuel usage and exhaust emissions. The results showed a significant improvement in overall performance, with savings coming from a number of areas; notably a significant reduction in instances of harsh braking and excessive idling. As a direct consequence of this, SVG benefited from a reduction in mechanical wear-and-tear, enhanced passenger comfort and fewer personal injury claims.
For SVG's drivers, the solution represents a way of supporting self-controlled driving behaviour, which allows for the continual improvement of personal driving styles. Fuel vouchers were awarded to drivers as an incentive for driving behaviour that lessened fuel costs, improved overall operating performance and reflected an awareness of environmental responsibility.
An evaluation of the long-term trial also revealed that after deducting additional costs, including system costs and drivers' bonuses, SVG achieved savings of more than 2,200 Euros per year per vehicle.
Achievements throughout Europe
Within a relatively short period, more than 10,000 buses in Europe have been equipped with a MiX Telematics fleet management system. Bus companies in Spain, Germany, France, Belgium and Great Britain are today benefiting significantly from the solution. One example of success comes from Go-Ahead London, a major operator in the capital of the UK, which first introduced Fleet Manager to its fleet four years ago, and is now realising a 15 percent fuel saving compared to 2008.
