Climate Change

The climate change debate

The scientific validity of humans' impact on climate change has been debated in the past, but it is now widely accepted that action needs to be taken to minimise the impact harmful emissions can have. So for those in the transport and logistics sector - including bus and coach [Bus and Coach] operators - fleet carbon footprint has become an increasingly important issue.

Evidence shows CO2 emissions warm the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in higher sea levels and more frequent cases of extreme weather. Governments across the world have made commitments to reducing carbon outputs and the UK is aiming to cut emissions to 80 per cent below the level of 1990 by 2050, with an interim target of 34 per cent less by 2020.

Fleet carbon footprints and pressure to cut emissions

With transport accounting for more than 20 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK, fleet operators working in emergency services [Emergency Services] and the bus and coach [Bus and Coach] industry have a role to play in contributing to the target. Vehicle sustainability is a key area for improvement, with more advanced engines using techniques such as exhaust gas recirculation to meet emissions standards. Fuel efficient driving can also make a difference, making driver training a priority for many companies.

Carbon offsetting

Through carbon offsetting, companies have the opportunity to become carbon-neutral by investing in certified sustainability projects - essentially making up for being unable to reduce their own emissions by the necessary amount. With transport emissions having risen by ten per cent over the last two decades - and increased demand and mileage reducing the impact of some of the improvements in efficiency - this approach can be particularly worthwhile for those in the transport and logistics sector, although steps should still be taken to continually minimise the impact a fleet is having on the environment.
