Jeavons Transport and Eurotir (UK) came together to form Jeavons Eurotir Limited, one organisation dedicated to the movement of freights around the UK and Europe.
Requirements
Jeavons Eurotir knew that vehicle and driver performance together with efficient communications are two major areas where they could save money. Jeavons Eurotir needed to curb average fuel consumption. Fuel is widely regarded as the second highest expense in operating a vehicle haulage fleet. But with the correct Fleet Management system, Jeavons Eurotir could cut excessive fuel usage and costs. Driver behaviour and vehicle maintenance are critical to controlling such expenses. Worn out tires, sub-optimal routes, excessive idling, harsh acceleration, speeding, and red band driving all contribute to unnecessary fuel consumption.
Solution
After reviewing the market, Jeavons Eurotir found that the FM Communicator with FM Terminal technology would not only aid fuel efficiency but also had other features and services they required. The flexible solution enables Fleet Managers to track driver behaviour and routes in real-time. They also receive driver, vehicle and route reports. Such information is an effective tool to analysis fleet behaviour which enables the Fleet Managers to work together with drivers to improve driver performance and vehicle usage. Data is recorded on a second-by-second basis with driver violations and detailed trip information is available to the Fleet Managers in real-time. Jeavons Eurotir would have records of the exact amount of fuel used by each driver in every vehicle .
The FM Terminal is an in-vehicle display unit for recording driving reasons and presenting information to drivers, including driving violations and messages. Drivers can also send responses and standard messages back to the office. This eradicates the need for expensive mobile phone calls.
Results
Once the solution was installed, within the first 6 months Jeavons Eurotir saved 3% in fuel costs, equating to a savings of EUR3800. These savings have already just about paid for the system itself.
For the first time Jeavons Eurotir could message their drivers through the FM Terminal. This communication improvement saved costs on mobile phone bills to an approximate value of EURI200. The ability to constantly monitor their drivers without actually phoning them significantly improved customer service as they could inform customers of exact delivery times. Monitoring the times and routes also enabled Jeavons Eurotir to do more collections and deliveries in one day. Jeavons Eurotir became more proactive with their drivers time and consequently have maximised productivit and effectiveness.
Most importantly, Jeavons Eurotir reduced fuel consumption and communication costs, making a saving of EUR5000 within only 24 weeks.
