Founded more than 100 years ago, the Hills Group is an independent family owned business based in Wiltshire, UK, and currently employs over 350 people. Their principle activities are recycling and waste management.

Social responsibility is very important to Hills Haulage. Hills contributes significantly to the regional economy by boosting recycling and restoring land for future benefit.

Requirements

Hills Haulage is also deeply concerned with the environment. As pollution is one of the biggest environmental threats,  the company wanted to  install a Fleet Management system that  would help to reduce their fuel usage , thereby lowering the amount of pollution they produced and cutting their fuel consumption and costs.

They also needed to manage driver utilisation and performance, to monitor whether each driver is driving effectively and not using excessive amounts of fuel.

Solution

Hills Haulage selected the FM Communicator from MiX Telematics’ established Fleet Management range. The FM Communicator was the ideal solutions as it monitors fuel efficiency, and driving behaviour which helps to reduce vehicle wear and tear and MiX Telematics provides report so that Hills Haulage can address the problem drivers and ultimately enhance each drivers’ productivity.

As the FM Communicator monitors how each driver is driving and as a result they can interpret how the vehicles performs. Hills Haulage can also actively and passively track their fleet, and historical tracking data can be used for the verification of time sheets.

Results

After installation, Hills Haulage began monitoring and benchmarking the vehicle and driver performance and was able to measure fuel consumption and costs. As the company could now pinpoint problem areas in terms of drivers and driving, theyby introduce driver training to modify inefficient driving practices. The results showed a 6.6% increase in fuel efficiency which would yield cost savings of EUR35,000. The fleet managers monitored idling time and quickly realized the negative effect of idling on fuel consumption and thus reduce the pollution produced by the fleet.

With training, driving behaviour improved and the general wear and tear  of vehicles was reduced. Overall the maintenance across the fleet was reduced by one day per month.

Hills Haulage received a daily activity timeline report,  and with consequently average driving days have been enhanced by thirty minutes (35 hours) per vehicle. At a current average revenue of EUR55 per hour,  this amounts to an extra EUR2000 per week saving across the fleet.
