RoadScan Pro is a video-based system which continuously monitors the view of the road ahead and has the capability to record the scene 15 seconds prior to, and 15 seconds after, any 'events' which may occur. Events may be triggered by a variety of factors, ranging from accidents and collisions to pre-programmed levels of harsh braking or harsh acceleration. In all situations the record function is activated by RoadScan Pro's onboard accelerometer, which detects excessive motion in either the horizontal or vertical planes or in terms of back-to-front movement.
The integration with MiX Telematics' Fleet Manager sees an instant alert sent to the transport operator whenever one of its vehicles triggers a RoadScan Pro event. The transport manager is then able to access the video evidence once the vehicle returns to base in order to ascertain the cause or nature of the incident.
Commenting on the system, Steve Coffin, Marketing & Operations Director for MiX Telematics, highlights a number of key benefits: "In addition to instantly providing operators with hard evidence which might, for example, demonstrate driver-behavioural issues, the alert can prove invaluable should the vehicle be involved in a collision. In many cases, timely reporting back to base following an accident is of the essence; if a perishable load is being carried, for instance, or if there has been a spillage. Then there is also the obvious need to feed back details of any casualties and damage as soon as possible so that contingency plans can be enacted.
"We are therefore delighted to be able to offer this innovative solution to add further value to the operational and road safety benefits already provided by MiX Telematics and RoadScan."
