Considering these benefits and the fact that the road transport industry alone is responsible for 18%* of global CO2 emissions, MiX Telematics launched the MiX Carbon Offset Initiative (COI), which further assists fleet customers in taking responsibility for their carbon footprint.
In an ideal world fleet operators could implement environmental projects independently, but as this is not always feasible the MiX COI provides fleet operators with a credible, accessible and cost effective way to offset the greenhouse gas emissions they are unable to reduce.
The MiX COI is suitable for commercial fleet management customers who wish to become carbon neutral but are unsure how best to achieve this, or unable to assign the necessary in-house resources required to implement an effective carbon reduction initiative with long-term value.

How it works
MiX Telematics calculates customers’ fleet-related carbon emissions as a CO2-ton value based on the data provided by the MiX Telematics fleet management solution. The value is calculated by measuring the fleet mileage and fuel consumption in relation to vehicle, engine and fuel types.
- The calculation of fleet-related carbon emissions is done at no extra cost for MiX Telematics’ customers.
- MiX Telematics facilitates the purchasing of carbon credits in the voluntary market, from leading, accredited providers. While the purchasing process remains completely transparent, customers have a choice as to what percentage of their carbon emissions they wish to account for.
Upon receiving unique carbon offset certificates, MiX Telematics customers can rest assured that they have invested in a first-rate fund that specialises in managing a global portfolio of accredited carbon offset projects.

More about Carbon Offset Initiative
Non-profit organisations, with expertise in particular fields of sustainability, develop certification standards in collaboration with leading organisations and governments around the world. These certification bodies lay the foundation for the development of feasible sustainability projects.
Companies then have the opportunity to become carbon neutral by investing in certified and accredited projects. While companies should develop a plan to continually reduce their carbon emissions, carbon offsetting enables them to make up for the carbon emissions they are unable to reduce. Carbon neutrality can be achieved in various ways, with offsetting through the purchase of carbon credits being the most common.
Carbon credit or offset projects are either technology, or land-use based, and typically grouped into renewable energy, methane abatement, energy efficiency, reforestation and the prevention of deforestation and fuel switching.
